Getting to Know Your Computer

EIDT-6910, Capstone: Practical Application of Instructional Design

A gradual, but imminent change has been developing in school districts across America. Textbooks, many of which are missing decades of relevant information or have become completely obsolete, are beginning to make their way to permanent areas of rest. Replacing these textbooks, is the dynamic superhighway of information affectionately known as the Internet. Traditional textbooks are becoming anachronistic while online textbooks, websites, and virtual classrooms are becoming routine in classrooms across America. In many school districts, students are supplied with their own computing device, whether it be a laptop, Chromebook, or tablet. This eLearning course is aimed at providing students with an opportunity to learn with a device they are already familiar with, enjoy using, and can be taken on virtually any device, anywhere.

How to Design a Logo

EIDT-6122: Designing an Instructional Website Using Multimedia

Over the course of my career, I have designed flyers, brochures, business cards, letterheads, logos, web sites, and many other digital and print media types. Never did I think specifically about a learning experience from the end-user. Rather, I was concerned more about readability, consistency of color and typefaces, grammar, balanced and symmetrical (or asymmetrical) design, white space, designing for the grid, the rule of thirds, the golden circles, and a bevy of other design fundamentals and principles. What I didn’t know then, that I do now, is that there is another layer of fundamentals and principles that, although there are parallels, are geared for a student or learner and not just an end-user. There is more to design than just design principles. Multimedia principles are just as important to design fundamentals when creating multimedia presentations. My previous education and career experience has helped to prepare me for this course because many of Richard Mayer’s multimedia principles are inherently part of good design. Good design and good learning experiences go hand-in-hand. If you don’t have good design, you probably won’t have a good learning experience. Conversely, not applying Mayer’s multimedia principles will most likely result in poor design.

So often in my career, I have been asked, "Hey! Can you whip up a quick logo?" or, "Can you knock out a logo today for me?" A logo should represent the face, emotion and identity of a company or product and should never be rushed into completion. Creating your own logo can save you tons of money because you won’t have to pay big money to a designer or design firm. As a matter of fact, with all of the online printing capabilities, you can do all of your own branding right from your home office!

Electronic Maintenance Management System (EMMS)

EDUC - 6135: Distance Learning (Online Orientation)

A need for modern maintenance record keeping has been identified by Bostitch Hospital System (BHS). An electronic maintenance management system (EMMS) will replace an antiquated paper system that requires room-size storage, time consuming record keeping, and unreliable record tracing. An online, EMMS software training module has been created to provide maintenance staff with a user-friendly means of learning and utilizing the EMMS software to keep accurate and efficient records. The initial train the trainer (managers and supervisors) phase will be a blended, face-to-face and online learning environment.  In the second phase, following completion and certification of the EMMS software training module and corresponding software, managers and supervisors will facilitate implementation of the EMMS software training module to their staff. Maintenance staff will train asynchronously during normal business hours and at their respective BHS locations
